It’s easy to imagine a newborn cot dressed with soft toys and layered blankets. For sleep, though, a simple, clear space is the more practical choice. Set it up around current safe-sleep advice rather than the styling in a catalogue.
Keep the sleep space clear
Use a firm, flat mattress that fits the cot, with a fitted sheet and no pillows, duvets, cot bumpers or soft toys in the sleep space. Put your baby down on their back for every sleep. Check the latest NHS or Lullaby Trust guidance if you’re unsure how advice applies to your situation.
