Choose a Pram for Your Actual Route

Picture the first ordinary outing: the front door, a kerb, a bus stop or the boot you use every week. Those details will tell you more about a pram than a long feature list. Start with the route you expect to take most often, not an imagined perfect day out.

Measure your everyday obstacles

Measure the narrowest doorway or hallway the pram needs to pass through, and check the folded dimensions against your car boot if you drive. If you rely on public transport, consider how manageable the folded pram will be in the space you usually travel through. Product dimensions are useful, but they can’t tell you whether lifting and folding it feels comfortable.

Think about your usual ground as well. A short walk on smooth pavements has different demands from uneven paths or a regular trip across grass. Look at wheel design, suspension details and the manufacturer’s guidance for the surfaces you expect to use.

Check the details you’ll use

Try to see a shortlisted model in person if you can: practise the fold, adjust the handle and check whether the basket is accessible with the seat attached. Ask what is included and what is sold separately, especially rain covers, carrycots or adapters. A bundle can appear simpler, but only if its parts fit your plans.

If the pram will be used from birth, confirm that the configuration is suitable for a newborn and follow the maker’s instructions. If you’re comparing a travel system, check compatibility for the exact car-seat model rather than relying on a general claim that it fits.

Shortlist for your routine

Write down your three most important checks, such as boot fit, easy folding and suitability for your usual walks. Compare models against those needs, then consider weight, storage and cost. The best fit is the one that works with your actual day, not the one with the longest list of extras.
